A splendid film set in Sweden during the early 1900's that focuses on a year in the life of the Ekdahl family. Numerous subplots are to be found, but the major story tells of Alexander (Bertil Guve), roughly twelve, and his younger sister, Fanny (Pernilla Allwin). Following the death of their father, mother rushes into a hasty marriage with an autocratic priest who wishes to break Alexander's will. The boy is stubborn, though, has a spirituality of his own that is willing to do battle with the man. Yet, is Alexander doomed to a Hamlet-like ending, or might something even worse await? A true masterpiece from Ingmar Bergman, who claimed he was retiring from directing upon this film's completion. The first half is very slow moving, yes, but by part two, you can't help but be captivated. Simply not to be missed! For those with a little more time and patience, check out the full five hour version.
