At eighteen years of age when I first saw the edited version of Ingmar Bergman's final film, I was blown away and proclaimed it my all time favorite. Fourteen years later after a long search, I stumbled onto the full version with the help of a CVMC member. Honestly, those less patient may fare better with the edited version; much of the cut material is simply a matter of seconds sliced out here and there during long pans across sets, for example. The editing was not limited to this, however. Scenes of up to about twenty minutes were also chopped out. Many of these help better explain the characters' actions; the most impressive, in my mind, is a dream sequence of our young hero's. Bergman buffs will certainly have no regrets; highly recommended!
