A German drifter touring the United States meets up with a woman and her nine year old daughter (Yella Rottlander) while attempting to book a plane ticket back home. An airline strike throws the three together for an evening, and come morning, the man finds himself guardian of the child, her mother "asking" the fellow to fly with the girl to Amsterdam, stating she'll meet the two of them there the next day. When the woman doesn't show, our hero and his young companion begin a search for grandma..., which is a bit complicated since the lass has no idea where granny lives and doesn't even recall her full name. Although some comical moments certainly arise, don't think of this one as a female version of Dutch; instead, as with much of director Wim Wenders' early stuff, this is a character study into an existential descent. Recommended if such material appeals to you.

Warning (rated NR): adult themes; mild sexual themes; brief nudity.
