Set in Greece during the year 200 B.C., this film follows a band of male shepherds who wander into a small town where all the men are absent, off fishing. Two romances quickly become the focus: one between an adult man and woman, the other between a boy and girl in the midst of puberty. In the former, will the woman run off with her potential lover, leave her husband behind; in the latter, will the boy stay with his first love, as he indeed desires? In both, the courtship is the major focus, this stage of romance here being nicely detailed. Slow moving, but a very pretty piece with a handsome cast, many of whom were actual sheepherders. Based on the myth of Daphnis and Chloe. Recommended!
Warning (rated NR): sexual themes; brief sexual scenes; brief/moderate nudity; violence.
