Director Louis Malle was told not to make this film, that its subject matter would guarantee a flop, perhaps ruin his career. Today, Murmur of The Heart is one of the better known foreign films in the American market; in Europe, it was a total smash! The story is of fourteen year old Laurent (Benoit Ferreux), the youngest boy of a well-to-do family living in 1950's France. In a slice-of-life manner, we see him steal, drink, visit a prostitute, endure the admiration of a younger boy, deal with his brothers. Then, after developing a small heart murmur, Laurent and his mother journey to a spa so he might recover; there, the lad must come to terms with his feelings for mom, his desire for her existing somewhere between boyhood and the onslaught of puberty. Murmur of The Heart is a charming film that sincerely grasps the struggles of early male adolescence and which is filled with a great jazz score, including music from Charlie "Bird" Parker. Not to be missed!
