Following clan custom, a twelve year old girl (Liu Oing) is whisked away to a rural Chinese village to there marry a toddler boy. Four years latter, the film really starts, the girl (Na Renhua) now "mature" and beginning to desire some things her six year old husband (Zeng Peng) can not fulfill. A serious turn for the worse occurs when she sleeps with a local man, winds up pregnant, law requiring adulteresses be be drown. Will our heroine escape this verdict, perhaps make a life for herself in town where it is rumored there is "freedom" for women, or does a less pleasant ending await? This beautifully photographed film is certainly of interest for its mere portrayal of an unfamiliar (to Westerners) ritual and its potential ramifications. Nicely done...
